A Quadratic Lower Bound for Homogeneous Algebraic Branching Programs

چکیده
An algebraic branching program (ABP) is a directed acyclic graph, with a start vertex s, and end vertex t and each edge having a weight which is an affine form in F[x1, x2, . . . , xn]. An ABP computes a polynomial in a natural way, as the sum of weights of all paths from s to t, where the weight of a path is the product of the weights of the edges in the path. An ABP is said to be homogeneous if the polynomial computed at every vertex is homogeneous. In this paper, we show that any homogeneous algebraic branching which computes the polynomial xn 1 + x n 2 + . . . + x n n has at least Ω(n2) vertices (and hence edges). To the best of our knowledge, this seems to be the first non-trivial super-linear lower bound on the number of vertices for a general homogeneous ABP and slightly improves the known lower bound of Ω(n log n) on the number of edges of in a general (possibly non-homogeneous) ABP, which follows from the classical results of Strassen [Str73] and Baur & Strassen [BS83]. On the way, we also get an alternate and unified proof of an Ω(n log n) lower bound on the size of a homogeneous arithmetic circuit (follows from [Str73, BS83]), and an n/2 lower bound (n over R) on the determinantal complexity of an explicit polynomial [MR04, CCL10, Yab15]. These are currently the best lower bounds known for these problems for any explicit polynomial, and were originally proved nearly two decades apart using seemingly different proof techniques. ∗Rutgers University, Email : [email protected], Research supported in part by a Simons Graduate Fellowship.

Expanders and time-restricted branching programs
The replication number of a branching program is the minimum number R such that along every accepting computation at most R variables are tested more than once; the sets of variables re-tested along different computations may be different. For every branching program, this number lies between 0 (read-once programs) and the total number n of variables (general branching programs). The best resul...
متن کاملLower Bounds for Syntactically Multilinear Algebraic Branching Programs
It is shown that any weakly-skew circuit can be converted into a skew circuit with constant factor overhead, while preserving either syntactic or semantic multilinearity. This leads to considering syntactically multilinear algebraic branching programs (ABPs), which are defined by a natural read-once property. A 2 size lower bound is proven for ordered syntactically multilinear ABPs computing an...
متن کاملBranching Program Uniformization, Rewriting Lower Bounds, and Geometric Group Theory
Geometric group theory is the study of the relationship between the algebraic, geometric, and combinatorial properties of finitely generated groups. Here, we add to the dictionary of correspondences between geometric group theory and computational complexity. We then use these correspondences to establish limitations on certain models of computation. In particular, we establish a connection bet...
متن کاملA Quadratic Time-Space Tradeoff for Unrestricted Deterministic Decision Branching Programs
The branching program is a fundamental model of nonuniform computation, which conveniently captures both time and space restrictions. In this paper we prove a quadratic expected time-space tradeoff of the form TS = Ω ( n2 q ) for q-way deterministic decision branching programs, where q > 2. Here T is the expected computation time and S is the expected space, when all inputs are equally likely. ...
متن کاملRestricted Nondeterministic Read-Once Branching Programs and an Exponential Lower Bound for Integer Multiplication
Branching programs are a well established computation model for Boolean functions, especially read-once branching programs have been studied intensively. In this paper the expressive power of nondeterministic read-once branching programs, i.e., the class of functions representable in polynomial size, is investigated. For that reason two restricted models of nondeterministic read-once branching ...
